Resumo
Chronic conditions such as dental caries, periodontal disease, temporomandibular disorders, and edentulism significantly compromise both oral and general health in the elderly population. Approved by the Ethics Committee of Fernando Pessoa University, this study presents a community-based intervention project structured in three phases: Advanced Consultancy, Training/Intervention, and Social Mobilization. A total of 67 older adults participated, including 21 in a pilot phase. Data were collected on the O’Leary Plaque Index, caries prevalence, edentulism, oral hygiene habits, prosthesis use, Body Mass Index, and the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index. Oral health literacy was assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and four days post-intervention. Theoretical and practical sessions addressed key topics, culminating in the “Odontogeriatrics Seminar,” which included participant testimonials. Although 73.1% of participants reported regular toothbrushing, the mean Plaque Index (65.19%) indicated substantial unmet oral health needs. Improvements in oral health literacy were associated with better oral hygiene behaviors, with effects sustained after four days. Inadequate use of dental prostheses negatively impacted functional, psychological, and comfort-related dimensions of oral health–related quality of life. High adherence rates and institutional recognition underscore the importance of continuing this project. Ongoing and future phases include primary care delivery, oral rehabilitation, and expansion to all Social Centers in the Greater Porto area.Referências
