Resumo
Objectives: To obtain information about oral hygiene and prosthetic habits, identify lesions, evaluate oral rehabilitation and verify if there is a relationship between sleeping with dentures and denture stomatitis (DS).
Methods: An observational study was carried out with the target population being elderly people from the Lajes do Pico Social Centers. Data was collected through a questionnaire, observation of the oral cavity and existing rehabilitation. The questionnaire collected information on oral hygiene habits and prosthetics. Oral observation identified the tooth loss and mucosal lesions. The state of conservation and adaptation of the prostheses was assessed. The data was statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test (α = 0.05).
Results: 67 elderly participants were included in the study, all of them with missing teeth. The most common type of prosthesis was the Acrylic Denture. Most of the dentures were unstable and 55.55% of the elderly reported having them for more than 10 years. The elderly brushed their dentures with toothpaste and 97.78% said they cleaned them once a day, just like their teeth. Almost half reported always sleeping with their dentures and 69.56% left them submerged when they were removed. The most prevalent lesion was DS, present in 69% of the elderly, which was not proven to be related to the habit of sleeping with dentures.
Conclusion: Regular oral and prosthetic hygiene habits were confirmed in the population studied, but they were unaware of the importance of resting their dentures every day, as well as other important aspects related to oral health.
